Betty Taopat Kao is an artist, curator, writer, environmentalist, and social change agent. She is one of the founding members of The Public Art & Puppetry Activist Collective at Hampshire College. Her work has been exhibited with the Antagonist Movement, Housework, The Amherst College Museum, and the Adverse Possession Gallery, among many other venues. Her writings have been featured in various publications including The NuyorAsian Anthology: Asian American Writings About New York City and Intellectos Magazine. In her body of work, she is predominantly interested in how artists use images to voice the collective subconsciousness; and how artists take on the bombardment of media that seeps into our culture and life, taking back popular culture and subculture from commercial enterprises through global waves of expression. Betty's work deals with the exploration of the mythologies of popular culture. Her major influences and investigations include anthropomorphic objects, metaphysics, Pan-Asian culture, Asian foods, medicines, sacred plants, packaging, and toys. Betty is a visual storyteller encouraging others to find their voice and to use any medium as an artist's material to tell these stories.
